On Tuesday morning, a 47 year old mechanic with the Westwood Department of Public Works in New Jersey was injured. The worker, Gary Haight, was allegedly working on the borough's garbage trucks when he suffered serious injuries.
For the past three years, Haight has been employed by the Department of Public Works. While working on a vehicle, the truck's hopper crushed his left arm. Haight also sustained a broken right foot and a large gauge in his right arm.
The accident took place before 7:00 AM and paramedics stationed at the Department of Public Works complex happened to be onsite and came to Haight's aid. They say he was stabilized and then transported to a local trauma unit where he had to have his left arm amputated.
Following the accident, operations at the Department of Public Works were suspended so the scene could be investigated by the Public Employees Occupational Safety and Health (PEOSH) Program.
