11 Year Old Succumbs to Burn Injuries

In the city of Phoenix, a young boy who suffered serious burn injuries during a backyard accident three weeks ago has succumbed to his burns.

Police say that 11-year-old Joe Anthony Fernandez sustained burns over 90% of his body when a wood burning stove in a backyard exploded. The only area of his body that did not suffer burn injuries were his feet.

The traumatic accident occurred on January 28 while Joe was at a friend's home.  Joe was in the backyard and with others who were using a metal wood-burning stove to keep warm.  The rest of his family was preparing to leave the residence when they noticed that the 11-year-old was missing. That's when they heard a loud explosion.

One of Joe's sisters said that he may have found some gas or accelerant and poured it into the top of the open stove, causing the fiery explosion.

Joe passed away on Friday evening after spending three weeks in critical condition in the hospital.
