Fatality Rate High for Adolescent Burn Victims

While medical advances over the past decade have helped to treat patients with burn injuries, there is still a high fatality rate for adolescent burn victims. One study published recently showed that children who suffered burns over 60% of their body or more were more likely to experience serious complications or death. This figure actually represents an improvement from studies published in the 1990s. Decades ago, doctors treating young burn patients found that children with 40% total body surface area (TBSA) burns were at a high risk for infection or death.

Medical science has brought advances in treatment that has helped all burn victims but especially children who may be too weak to fight off infection. The latest study assessed patients at a children's hospital in Texas. The study, which looked at 952 children ranging in age from 6 to 10 also found that the older the victims, the more likely they were to be seriously harmed. If you sustained a burn injury due to third party negligence, contact the Knowles Law Firm now to speak with a Phoenix personal injury attorney as you may have the right to file a claim for your wounds, pain, and suffering.
