  Phoenix Crashes involved 69 Vehicles
Posted By Phoenix Personal Injury Attorney

The Associated Press reported that 69 vehicles in Phoenix were involved in at least three separate crashes on an interstate near the Phoenix downtown area during Saturday evening.  Officers say that the accidents left several people injured and that two people suffered serious injuries.  Six individuals had to be taken to local hospitals and several others were treated at the scene of the accident after suffering minor injuries.

The state's Department of Public Safety said a five-mile stretch of Interstate 10 had to be closed until 6:30 PM.  The road was blocked off at Washington Street near downtown Phoenix.  And on duty officer from DPS said the cause of the auto accidents still had not been determined.

40 people involved in the accidents still remained on the interstate for several hours after collisions.  Authorities were seen handing out snacks and water and keeping people in air conditioned city buses until arrangements could be made to transport individuals home.

Police say they will continue to investigate to see what sparked the crashes.

Man Gets 3 Years of Jail Time for Elder Abuse
Posted By Phoenix Personal Injury Attorney

Last week Friday, a former nursing assistant at the East County rehabilitation center in San Diego was sentenced to three years in prison.  54-year-old Felix Panem pled guilty in June to charges of rape of an incoherent patient and elder abuse.  Panem admitted to forcing himself on a 76-year-old patient in her room on numerous occasions.

Last December, Panem was placed under arrest after another employee of the El Dorado Care Center caught him having sex with elderly woman.  She had worked at the nursing home for three years.

El Cajon police officer David Vojtaskovic testified and said Panem, "told me that he came in (to her room) and cleaned her up."  He also said, "He changed her and had sexual intercourse with her."

The officer said that he tried to speak with the victim about the matter, but she kept asking him why he was there and who he was even though he was wearing a police uniform.  The victim described Panem as a friend but did not recall seeing him or having intercourse with him.

2 Killed and 1 Injured after Car Accident in Phoenix
Posted By Phoenix Personal Injury Attorney

In Phoenix, authorities are reporting that two people are dead after a single vehicle car accident, which took place last Friday night.

According to police officers, 35-year-old Shelly Skaggs and an unknown adult male were victims of the crash and were both killed.  Police also report that Skaggs' 20-year-old son remains at a Valley hospital in critical condition because he suffered serious injuries during the auto accident.

At around 9:30 PM, a 2002 Mercedes was traveling westbound on New River Road and was supposedly speeding west of Interstate 17 when it failed to negotiate a curve.  The car rolled numerous times and ejected all three occupants. The vehicle then burst into flames.

Police say that Skaggs just purchased the Mercedes earlier that day and they have not been able to determine who was driving when the accident took place.  They are investigating as they believe speed and alcohol contributed to the collision.

Amount of Money Collected for Medical Malpractice Settlements in L.A. Increases
Posted By Phoenix Personal Injury Attorney

In a report that was released last week, it is stated that the amount of money Los Angeles County paid to settle medical malpractice lawsuits increase by a staggering 50% in the past two years. The news is quite startling as the number of medical malpractice cases filed in the county has decreased significantly.

A study from the Abaris Group, a Walnut Creek-based health care consulting firm, reported that Los Angeles County paid $8 million to settle cases involving medical malpractice in 2005. In 2007, the county paid $12 million.

According to the authors of the report, there are still outstanding claims for 2008 and 2009, so it was not possible to calculate the total amount of settlements for those years. However, the report found that the number of malpractice cases filed against area hospitals and clinics dropped from 354 in 2002 to 107 in 2009.  The authors believe this decrease may relate to patient safety efforts in the healthcare industry in general and at the Department of Health Services.

If you have been a victim of medical malpractice, become informed of your legal options by contacting our law office and speaking with a Phoenix personal injury attorney.

Police in the city of Phoenix report that a woman and several children were involved in a serious car accident with a Valley Metro bus.  The accident took place on Thursday afternoon at approximately 3:40 PM.

According to Phoenix Fire Department spokesman, Tony Mure, the collision took place at the end of an off ramp near Interstate 17 at Rose Garden Lane.  The woman, a 54 year old grandmother and her six grandchildren (ages 2, 3, 6, 9 and two infants) were involved in the car accident.

After the crash, all of the victims were taken to local hospitals.  Mure told reporters that no one had serious injuries.

Video footage captured by local news stations showed a minivan lying on its side near a parked Metro Valley bus.  Mure said that there were several passengers on the bus who were treated for minor injuries.  At this time, the accident remains under investigation.

Injury Lawsuit Filed Against Owen Wilson & Brother
Posted By Phoenix Personal Injury Lawyer

A paparazzo has filed a personal injury lawsuit against Andrew Wilson and actor Owen Wilson. The paparazzo, Clint Brewer, claims that Andrew should be held liable for his injuries after he pushed Brewer down a flight of stairs.

The lawsuit stems from an incident that occurred back in 2008. According to Brewer, he was trying to snap a picture of Owen when Andrew shoved him, causing him to fall down the stairs. As a result of the fall, Brewer claims he has suffered "severe and extreme mental and emotional distress," and that he will "experience pain, suffering, worry, and anxiety in the future."

Because Andrew was working for Owen at the time the incident occurred, Brewer has also named Owen a defendant in the lawsuit. He is seeking $3,251 for medical expenses and $500,000 in general damages.

  Workers’ Compensation Benefits
Posted By Phoenix Personal Injury Lawyer

If you have suffered an injury while at work or as the result of your job, you should consult an experienced Phoenix personal injury attorney at Knowles Law Firm about your rights to workers’ compensation benefits. Through the workers’ compensation system, injured workers can obtain both financial and medical benefits to offset the wages they have lost from being unable to work, and to cover any medical bills incurred as a result of the injury.

To recover compensation in a personal injury lawsuit, the victim must prove their accident or injury was caused by another person’s negligence or recklessness.  It is not necessary to establish fault in order to recover workers’ compensation benefits. Workers’ compensation benefits are available to anyone who suffers an injury while on the job, regardless of who is at fault for the accident or injury.  As long as the injury occurred while on the job or as the result of required job duties, a worker will qualify for workers’ comp benefits.
